Enjoyed Top Shelf's Motown Madness Musical Revue. If you are into having a good time with fun loving people, this is an event to check out.

Performers were great. They were personable and sincere about making sure everyone enjoyed the show. The band was fabulous. The staff was friendly and professional. The location was intimate and convenient with the parking lot nearby.

The audience participation is something we enjoyed, as well as getting a chance to get up & dance a bit.

It was very familiar and friendly. We plan to tell our friends. I know there are people that expect a different kind of show but this is exactly the kind of show we were looking for.

  • Rating_4_0 Written on Mar 05 2011.  The female group, musicians and Top Shelf bought Motown back to the audiences with their songs, dancing and great vibrant costume changes. There weren't any bad seats. The performers would come around to every table serenading, dancing or encourage you to participate with them throughout the whole evening. They put on an electrifying high energy show with their great voices, story telling and whimsical antics.

The Cantonese Chinese food was authentic and flavorful. Be warn, the two food requirement for each show ticket, will probably end up costing more than purchasing a dinner/show ticket. For that was what happened to us. But we didn't mind since it was good Chinese food, cooked to order with no MSG and the use of very little oil.

Spend a "groovy" Thursday evening with "Top Shelf's Motown Madness Musical Revue and Dinner Show at the Imperial Palace." It's like participating in a non stop rapturous never ending party of laughter and merriment.

I hope more people will see it, as they should enjoy the music.

  • Rating_4_0 Written on Mar 04 2011. It was a fun evening. They did a decent job of covering many of the recognized Motown standards. I wish they'd leave out the more recent stuff (Prince, Lisa Stansfield, "We Are the World", etc), and focus on 60's & 70's Motown classics, many of which were arranged in medleys at the beginning of the show and were so short you barely got to recognizing the song before it became something else. What, no Smokey Robinson???

We didn't have the buffet, but ordered regular food to fulfill the two item minimum. Potstickers and spring rolls were cold (probably leftover from the buffet), but chow fun was hot and pretty good.

  • Rating_5_0 Written on Mar 04 2011. A terrific night! Top Shelf is a thoroughly professional R&B/MoTown/Duwop/R&R ensemble backed by talented musicians and vocalists. They provided an entertaining and fun evening

  • Rating_1_0 Written on Mar 04 2011. We got out of there as soon as we could. Very amateurish performances. The setting is basically a chinese restaurant with a stage. Like bad Chinese food there was too much filler and not enough meat. The voices and the band were just adequate, but the singers were more into telling their own stories of what they did in the sixties like we were fans. Who cares. Didn't like the "audience participation" part where they went up to tables in the audience like they were in Vegas. Beware, the two item minimum was in fine print and sodas (the cheapest item) were $5 each.

  • Rating_4_0 Written on Mar 04 2011. The musical group Top Shelf was excellent, great songs and a lot of energy and audience particiption. Look for the dancing waiter - he is very good and not really a part of the show. You can't help leaving feeling good.

4 stars; Written on Apr 26 2010 This is like the time machine:Going in the past in the middle of your living room. The voices and the harmony was amazing. We loved the interaction with the singers!!!!

4 stars; Written on Apr 26 2010 High energy fun event. All of the performers were great and the band was fabulous!! It was evident that the performers were having as much fun as the spectators.

First class entertainment !!! You cant sit still listening to their renditions of the original motown artists songs. Its almost impossible to distinguish their music from the originals.
The girls are talented and sexy hot.
The guys are totally professional and keep the show moving with the help of a very good band. Its my City ( San Francisco )at its best . Bottom Line Its real "FUN" with an underlining message of goodwill.

4 stars; Written on Apr 26 2010 We had a great time. The cast is not only very talented, but knows how to work an audience. We will be back to see them again.

4 stars; Written on Apr 27 2010 Fabulous and energetic performance. Crowd was really into it also, which made the whole night fun. We were probably the youngest couple there, but I think everyone there loved the music of that era. The dance party on the stage at the end was a bit cheesy, but was still good fun. Small and intimate venue, highly recommended!

IT WAS A BLAST!!!!! Show was packed for the Monday show with a school group who saw it last year also. It made for a great show with different ages grooving to the music!!!! The singers know how to work the crowd and get everyone singing.....people also got up and started dancing to the music. Great band and terrific singers, nice to know they are locals. Plan on going again with a bigger group of friends. GO, you'll love it!!!!!

4 Stars; This is a great show for all you MOTOWN lovers. I took my 26yrs old daughter & my 23yrs old son.....and the LOVED it! Being a native San Franciscan we had a extra dose of pride being able to support our local talent. - Written on Nov 23 2009

4.0 Stars:  No Motown enthusiast should ever miss this performance. I travelled to San Francisco for the first time for my birthday. This event was one of many events I planned for myself. I enjoyed the story behind the events surrounding the success of Motown, dancing, singing and band so much that my cheeks were hurting from constantly smiling. I loved the way the performers encouraged audience participation. I would highly recommend this show. If possible I would recommend the performers fly to Chicago and perform in one of our many wonderful theaters. I bet they would do quite well. If they come to Chicago I would see the show again, this time with several friends and family members. - Written on Jun 21 2009

4/17/2010: Patty Villeggiante. Hello Everyone, What can I say except the Motown Madness Fundraiser was sooooo much fun and everyone said they had a great time. What a great night with Family, Friends and the J'LaChic Production bringing us back in time. We raised $10,000.00 thanks to all of you. Lots of people expressed they would like to do this a...gin next year. If your all in for this i would be willing to do it to raise money for the children.

Nichole Villeggiante: Great job!!!!!! Had a blast!

TopShelf PartyBand: Hi Patty,  - on behalf of the Production, we were honored and enjoyed every minute. Working with you and Debbie and supporting such a tremendous cause made the evening a 'jewel of a night'. Out of all of our Motown Madness Productions, your guests were one of the best and truly put 'us' in the party mood! Thanks again, and we'd be delighted to work together with you on that magic 60 coming up :-) -

4 Stars; We had a ball, my husband requested a special song for me and they seranaded me and brought us to the front of stage and sang to me. Awesome, the guys were wonderful and would recommend this to everyone who loves Motown.....          - Written on Nov 09 2009

3 Stars; It was a hidden jewel of San Francisco. Most of the band and singers are local San Franciscans. The band came out to the lounge and played for another hour. We stayed and danced. I haven't had so much fun in a long time. It was an inexpensive evening with friends.

Rating_3_0; * Written on May 03 2010.  We enjoyed the show. The singers were very personable and we liked the way they interacted with the audience. Would recommend this show to anyone who enjoys the Motown-era music.

4 Stars; Written on Nov 23 2009. Great selections of songs and well paced. The performers are talented and joyous, the musicians excellent and it is all about the music and not the performers. Forgot to ask if there is a CD. If so would like to purchase one.

3 Stars; Written on Nov 23 2009. It started out good, but .... I would have like to see the musicians better, they were very good too. However right before a short intermission the guys and gals came down off the stage and started to engage with the audience, singing to us personally, making eye contact, and that made all the difference. They even got a few folks up on stage, and from then on it was great! The after party was also great, having the singers wander around and sing and dance with us all. We loved that.

As a continuation of Father's Day evening with Dad, I made reservations for this live stage show called Motown Madness that was showing at Theatre 39 at Pier 39.  He had mentioned this show to me about a month ago, so I purchased the tickets, and hadn't said a word about the show until dinner at Seoul Garden.  Needless to say, he was very surprised.

My dad, born and raised here in S.F, is a baby boomer, so he loves the music of the 60s.  Motown music for those of you who don't know what that genre is, early soul music like the Tempations with their hit My Girl, The Four Tops, Smokey Robbinsen, Diana Ross and the Surpremes...etc.

The show was great, Theatre 39 is on the second level of Pier 39.  It is a local show, the main performers are a trio called Top Shelf, 3 local older guys, graduates of Lowell, Washington, and Balboa high schools. And 3 other local gals as well.   With this little aspect, it definitely gave the show great  h e a r t .  Brought back a lot of memories for my dad as they are pretty much the same age as he is.

The Theatre itself was very small and intimate, very comfortable seats. Every seat is probably a great seat.  However, the sound system was extremely weak.  There were times where the singers voices sounded very echoey and the microphones screeched a few times.  The live band was great, but they overpowered the singers due to the weak sound system.

Overall, very entertaining local show remembering the days of Motown in the 1960s. Dad enjoyed the show very much, as he was able to sing along to the songs he grew up with.

=)

I can't say enough about the new productions offered at Theater 39. When I first came to San Francisco 12 years ago we did all of the touristy things and we watched some strange SF movie in Theater 39.

J'LA Chic has taken the once hokey tourist trap and transformed it into an amazing venue that takes a modern spin on the rat-pack days.

The lounge is homey with a touch of Vegas style (not too much so) and the theater is the perfect place for families or a night out on the town.
They offer a variety of shows including a Motown Madness show - a Vegas style lounge show - a comedy showcase - and a magician that tops all others. Besides the amazing quality of the performances the price can't be beat.

Although very new in the venue of Theater 39, J'LA Chic has a long history in the Bay Area. It has been a long time since I have seen performers in a San Francisco theater actually represent the people/demographics and the fact that they are incredibly talented performers is just a bonus. Additionally in their commitment to be a community theater they actually give tickets to the community; making donations to Community Access Ticket Services (a phenomenal non-profit that provides access to cultural events to under-served populations across the Bay Area).

To sum it up - Theater 39 proves that Pier 39 is not just for tourists anymore!
